Busting the myths – is there an outright ban on wood-burning stoves coming soon?

    The short answer is NO!

With lots of misinformation being published, many people with wood burning stoves are confused. While no ban is on the horizon, new regulations are coming into force.

Wood burners are often blamed for high pollution levels; however, modern burners emit far fewer particles than older versions and open fires (which are the least efficient and produce the highest emissions). Modern Ecodesign burners are designed to burn more cleanly and efficiently, minimising harmful emissions. They can reduce particulate matter by up to 90% compared to open fires and 80% compared to older stoves (source: Charnwood).

All owners of wood-burners have a responsibility to adhere to regulatory changes which have been put in place to limit emissions and protect the environment, with a focus on more efficient and cleaner appliances, and responsible use by burning authorised fuels.

I’ve got a wood-burner, do I need to get rid of it?
In the UK, the Government’s 2023 Environmental Improvement Plan does say that there is no intention to ban wood-burning stoves as many households rely on them as a source of heating, hot water or cooking.

However, there are rules on what can be burnt. In a Smoke Control Area (SCA), it is an offence to emit smoke from a chimney of a building, furnace or from any fixed boiler.  Check with the local authority for information about these areas.

I want to get a wood-burner, what should I look out for?
If you’re looking to get a new burner, use a recommended supplier who will ensure you are buying a compliant appliance that meets the Ecodesign standards and regulations which set limits on emissions and efficiency. This will ensure you meet the regulations for new appliances.

    What to burn?

Always use hard wood that is seasoned and dry. Burning wet or unseasoned wood can cause excessive smoke, poor combustion, and create a buildup of creosote in your chimney, which can lead to chimney fires.

Whether you’ve had your wood-burner for years or just had one installed, keeping the chimney clean with regular sweeps is essential not just for safety, but also for reducing emissions and protecting the environment.

Clean chimneys increase efficiency too which ensures better burning leading to less smoke, fewer emissions and a lower carbon footprint.

By maintaining your chimney properly, you’re not only extending the life of your appliance and improving safety, but you’re also doing your part in minimising the environmental impact of wood burning.  Contact us now to book your sweep or for more advice.
