Did you know that slumbering your fire is dangerous?
Slumbering, where you shut down the air vents in your wood-burner or stove, reduces the air supply and prevents it from burning overnight at a low rate, potentially requiring relighting. This practice should be avoided.
Why, we hear you ask?
For a number of reasons! Firstly, by restricting oxygen, smoke and chemicals condense, leading to a creosote build-up in both the stove and chimney. This is a major cause of chimney fires.
Slumbering can also potentially damage the stove and liner, leading to essential repairs and maintenance or having to replace it completely.
Most importantly, it can lead to an increase in dangerous carbon monoxide (CO) levels. Known as the silent killer, CO is produced when fuels including oil, coal and wood don’t burn completely. Unless you had a detector fitted, you wouldn’t know if it was occurring as it has no colour, taste or smell.
